Silver Sounds was formed in 2001 by a group of older people belonging to the Brighton & Hove Coalition of Older People who travelled to Perugia, Italy to participate in the international older people’s Festival 'La Terza Festa'. The event set out to challenge some of the barriers that stand in the way older people’s participation in the life of their local communities. The Brighton & Hove group were invited to contribute a performance to the opening of the festival.
The group chose to form a Samba Band because this is an activity not normally associated with older people. This experience, of performing in Italy, convinced the group that drumming was not only fun but could also send out a powerful message that challenged stereotypes about what older people can and cannot do. It also provides opportunities for physical and mental exercise in a fun social setting.
The group, with the support of Brighton & Hove CityCouncil was determined to carry on after the Italian trip and to develop an organisation to keep the band alive, covering its costs through subscriptions, payments for rehearsals and paid performances. Silver Sounds remain open to any older person over 55 who wishes to join.
Silver Sounds continues to “Drum for Fun" and remains a member of the B&H Coalition of Older People now known as the Pensioners’ Forum.
Paul has been playing drums for over 20 years but in the last 15 he has immersed himself into the authentic Brazilian drumming style. He has made a particular study of the cultural roots in Brazilian Carnival music and dance and has travelled extensively to Africa and South America in pursuit of his musical passion.
Since it's inception Paul has been leader of Silver Sounds for most of the time. His boundless enthusiasm and energy has provided a constant inspiration to the band. This has been reflected in the many Silver Sounds performances around Sussex where the audience, young and old, are encouraged to participate.
With specialist knowledge of Maracatu Carnival music from the North East of Brazil Paul also leads the carnival company “Cruzeiro Do Sul” a band which consists of over 50 dancers and drummers.
Paul is well known for his drum and dance workshops with many community projects. In particular the many special needs groups, schools, including 'Unified Rhythm' which some Silver Sounds members also belong. Corporate training programmes, global H.I.V. and A.I.D.S. groups involve Paul with his specialist experience in inspiring group involvement. He has traveled to many parts of Europe where his skills are in great demand.
Paul's specialist knowledge in the field of the Brazilian Carnival has expanded into the manufacture of drums, berimbau, shekeres and carnival costumes.
